Medical Cannabis and in particular CBD (Cannabidiol) has become a hot topic globally in recent years. With liberalisation of cannabis regulations a global trend, more and more New Zealanders are interested in the potential for medicinal CBD products to treat almost anything from anxiety to weight loss.

the situation

In December 2018, a legislation change in New Zealand led to improved access to CBD (cannabidiol) products as they became prescription medicines. Although there is a plethora of information online about medical cannabis most of it is poorly documented, based on partisan positions about recreational cannabis and doesn’t reflect the specific regulatory environment in New Zealand.

our approach

We noted the intense patient interest in medical cannabis and the sheer amount of misinformation that was promoted primarily online. Furthermore we realised in discussions with clinicians that many doctors did not know enough about medical cannabis and didn’t know where to go to learn more.

the solution

We created mcinfo.com as the source for New Zealand patients and clinicians to learn and obtain high quality information about the use, potential benefits and risks of using cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other medicinal cannabinoid products.

Site content includes information on medical cannabis, uses of medicinal cannabinoids and all about these products for anyone to view and special content in a closed section of the site written for prescribers, nurses and pharmacists.

The For Prescribers section includes information on the legislation in New Zealand relevant to medical cannabinoids, summaries of the evidence for efficacy and undesirable effects.
